I carefully selected/patiently reviewed/thoroughly examined several profiles and ultimately decided upon/went with/chose a contractor/builder/tradesperson who seemed qualified/experienced/competent.
However/Alas/Sadly, this decision/choice/selection proved to be my biggest mistake/worst error/fatal flaw. From the start/beginning/onset, there were red flags/warning signs/suspicious activities.
